Creator of Rurouni Kenshin manga/anime avoids jail time in child pornography possession case

Rurouni Kenshin manga restarts serialization just seven months after author’s child porn arrest

According to the Yomiuri Shimbun, investigators discovered several DVDs that showed nude under-15 year-old girls at Watsuki’s Tokyo office. Similar DVDs were also reportedly found at his house.

Yomiuri Shimbun adds that during another child pornography case, suspicions that Watsuki had purchased illicit DVDs featuring underage girls surfaced.

Watsuki is quoted as telling authorities, “I liked girls from the upper grades of elementary school to around the second year of junior high school.”

Debuting in 1994, Rurouni Kenshin has sold over 70 million copies and went on to spawn a hit anime and several live-action films.
The last few months have had some intense ups and downs for the Rurouni Kenshin franchise. Riding high on the success of its live-action film adaptation trilogy, fans got really excited when series creator Nobuhiro Watsuki returned to writing and drawing regularly serialized installments of the manga last September, with the start of the comic’s Hokkaido Arc.
However, just two months later Watsuki was arrested on charges of possession of child pornography, with investigators seizing roughly 100 DVDs and CDs from his personal collection and the author admitting that he “liked girls between the ages of upper elementary school students to about the second year of junior high” (in Japan, elementary school students are between 6 and 11 years old, with the second year of junior high corresponding to an age of 13 or 14).
Immediately following Watsuki’s arrest, Jump Square, the monthly manga anthology which carried the Rurouni Kenshin Hokkaido Arc, announced that it would be suspending the series indefinitely, which some took to mean permanently. Though Watsuki was subsequently fined 200,000 yen (US$1,890) for his infraction of the Anti-Child Prostitution and Pornography Ordinance, he managed to avoid serving any jail time, and now he’s avoided having his manga series permanently axed, as Jump Square publisher Shueisha is welcoming Watsuki back with resumption of the Rurouni Kenshin Hokkaido Arc’s serialization.
On April 23, a statement appeared on the Jump Square website reading:
The series [Rurouni Kenshin Hokkaido Arc] has been on extended hiatus, and we deeply apologize for the trouble and worry this has caused readers and other interested parties.
Even now, the author is reflecting on and regretting his actions every day. However, taking into consideration the various opinions that have been expressed [by readers and interested parties], and believing that responding to them through creating the manga is the obligation of both the author and publisher, we will be resuming the series’ serialization in the July issue of this magazine (which goes on sale June 4). We hope for your understanding in this matter.
Given the slap on the wrist Watsuki was given by the Japanese criminal justice system, there’s a chance that his domestic fans might consider his arrest to now be water under the bridge. However, the Rurouni Kenshin manga and anime also have large followings overseas, including in societies that are far less lenient than Japan regarding the sexualization of minors, and it remains to be seen whether consumers and publishers in those countries will be so forgiving.
Yes that may be true, but we here at Weebs.fun love Watsuki-sensei and will continue to support Rurouni Kenshin, just like the Japanese who welcomed him and Rurouni Kenshin back with open arms.

For me I thought the anime was kind of cheesy, but Samurai X was awesome.

Shows you how different japanese and western values are. If this had happened in the west the would have never worked again, yet the nips didn't give a shit and Kenshin is even in the new Jump Force game.

Just look at this bull shit.

I can't believe it....

Is it possible to like someone's work but hate the person designed it? I don't know the proper answer to taht. Because people say if you like something a person has made regardless of how disgusting that person is you are supporting them. We all hate Adolph Hitler for what he did but when you look at his art you can't help but think he was a damn good artist but you fear that if you say that outloud people would think you supported Hitler in anything.

I want to say Rurouni Kenshin is still a favouirte but i fear that if i stick with that people would think i'm supporting a pedophile and...no i am not.

Yup.

Still didn't stop a lot of American :soy::soy::soy::soy: from saying they weren't going to watch Kenshin again.
american moralfags also got mad when they discovered that the director Neet-Ju had tweeted anti-semitic stuff, its funny how easily they turn their backs to something they supposedly liked because of something the author did.

Simple possession of child pornography wasn't even a crime in Japan until a few years ago when the (((west))) pressured Japan to criminalize it.

Yes but Asian girls are so neotenous cheesy pizza of them is really unnecessary.

Besides that I believe it was up until the late 90s that even production was legal.

But the Japanese don't care (even if the laws are on the books and they will enforce them), I mean culturally it's no big deal to them unlike in the west where someone charged with possession like Watsuki-sensei was would certainly never work again and in addition to that may very well face many years in prison (potentially decades but at least a few) as well as having to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

I'm fascinated about how fast (in historical terms) opinions and morality changes.

For example, as late as in the 1970s, hardcore child pornography was being legally produced in Western Europe, mainly Denmark, and commercialized in countries like The Netherlands, Germany, Italy, etc. Did you know that, @Leucosticte ?
And it was mainly actual small kids getting dicked by adults, not some 14 yo developed JB with her teen boyfriend or something.

It's completely surreal to think that nowadays, even here in Brazil, where hebe/ephebophilia aren't nearly as much curbed as in the US for example, something as simple as offering 100 bucks to kiss a 13 yo girl (who would statistically not even still be kissless) would infringe so fucking many laws. In the US, even kissing a 17 yo, depending on the state, without money being even involved, can badly fuck your life over.
